Windows 7  ICS Not Giving Out DHCP
Hello, I am trying to share an internet connection out via ICS in Windows 7 - all computers in the network are Windows 7, and in a homegroup together. When I select the ICS option I tell it to share it over the Ad-Hoc Wireless Connection. When the computers join the network, they don't seem to be receiving a normal DHCP address - only APIPA. I have tried setting the IPs to manual, and setting the clients' gateway to the host's IP. When I manually assign an IP, I can ping all the computers, but when it's an APIPA address, I can't - any suggestions? All computers are Windows 7, network type is Ad-Hoc, Computers can ping each other with DHCP IP (192.168.1.x).

There are some tips here that might help you: http://www.jpuddy.net/2009/11/11/changing-the-dhcp-range-for-internet-connection-sharing-in-windows-7/

Hi, To use ICS, make sure the local area network (LAN) connection on each network computer is configured to get an IP address automatically. In addition, Do not use ICS on a network with domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, or DHCP servers. And don't use ICS on systems configured for static IP addresses. For more information, you can refer to the following link. Please make sure your configuration is correct. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing Best Regards, NikiPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Unfortunately, Erik and Niki your solutions did not help me. I downloaded a free DHCP server, which assigned an IP address to the client. Here is some more information: After using a DHCP server, the client automatically connected to the Ad-Hoc and received an IP address of 192.168.1.7 and the host had a static IP address of 192.168.1.1 (I assigned this). The Gateway for the client is set to the host. After the IP settings are done, I launch the connection to the Internet through Manage Adapators, and the type of internet is a mobile/cell-broadband card. The card does not have Wi-Fi built in (unfortunately). When the computers are connected like this, with the Internet running, Windows 7 Network Centre detects an Internet connection and displays the Internet Globe in N.C. on the host and the client. However, I am only able to access the internet on the host computer, and not on the client. When I disconnect from the Internet, neither computer detects an Internet connection through N.C. I then noticed that the broadband card was receiving an IP, so I decided to change the IPs around to the IP the Mobile/Cell-broadband card was receiving, which was 10.10.2.195/255.255.255.255 and I manually changed the host IP to 10.10.2.196 and the clients to 10.10.2.197 and then suddenly, I was able to access Skype on the client computer - I even made a phonecall. But I could not browse a webpage, or anything else on the client or host. I then pinged the client's IP from the host and this is what happened: C:\Users\Antares>ping 10.10.2.197 Pinging 10.10.2.197 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.10.2.196: Destination host unreachable. Request timed out. Reply from 192.168.20.254: TTL expired in transit. Reply from 192.168.20.254: TTL expired in transit. Ping statistics for 10.10.2.197: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 3, Lost = 1 (25% loss), Notice how the IPs change during the ping. I now decided to ping the host computer, from the client: C:\Users\dmcg>ping 10.10.2.197 Pinging 10.10.2.197 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.10.10.197 : Destination host unreachable. Reply from 10.10.10.197 : Destination host unreachable. Reply from 10.10.10.197 : Destination host unreachable. Reply from 10.10.10.197 : Destination host unreachable. Ping statistics for 10.10.2.197 : Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), I also have the IP config settings for the broadband modem, which came from the client. PPP adapter Cell-Broadband: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.2.195 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0 Is it worth setting the gateway on the host and client to 10.2.2.195 (cell-broadband)? Or setting the client's gateway address to the host's IP? Thankyou.

Hi, I noticed that you could use Skype but could not browse the web page. It could be DNS issue. Please assign your DNS server for each client PC. If you don't know which one to enter, you can check it on your host PC by command: ipconfig /all when it is working properly. If the issue persists, please use the Route print command and copy the result here. I have a similar issue, which I think is a problem with Windows 7 not doling out an IP address properly. My setup is a Windows 7 laptop connected wirelessly to the internet. This connection is shared ("Allow other users to connect through this internet connection") and gets its IP address dynamically. My xbox 360 is connected to the ethernet port of my laptop, by way of a switch and two regular cat5 cables. The Lan port of my Windows 7 laptop is set to automatically assign IP addresses but appears as "Unidentified network". The IP settings on my Xbox appear as something very strange (168.xxx.xx.xxx). The subnet and gateway are 255.255.0.0 and 0.0.0.0 respectively. I have tried with automatic DNS settings and manual DNS settings (with the DNS settings the same as my laptop). ipconfig /all and Route print give the following: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. Hi, Please set the DNS manually. You can refer to the following article to access TCP/IP settings. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-TCP-IP-settings I have searched DNS server for you. Please use the following DNS server addresses. Prefered DNS server: 4.2.2.1 Alternate DNS server: 4.2.2.2 If it doesn't work, please find one from the following link : http://www.tech-faq.com/public-dns-servers.html Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information. Also try to reset the router.
